EFAEP Statement for Countdown 2010 Declaration
EFAEP seeks to be the leading organisation for all Environmental Professionals across Europe. It supports environmental professionalism as an essential element of European sustainability whilst also having regard to the social and economic implications of environmental solutions. The work of environmental professionals is integral to conservation work and in reducing the rate of biodiversity loss.
By being a Federation of Environmental Associations EFAEP is uniquely placed to promote and co-ordinate the many and varied aspects of environmental work and environmental professionals, including those working on biodiversity and conservation, while maintaining the separate identities of its member organizations.
EFAEP seeks to influence and implement the environmental agenda throughout Europe. It will do so by being respected for its adherence to sound, objective science rather than political lobbying but will be proactive where scientific evidence supports it. Where possible it will also use its influence within the wider global context through links beyond the European boundaries.
EFAEP will achieve this through the following means:
- Contributing to the development of environmental policy within the EU and other appropriate bodies
- Advising on and disseminating information on EU Directives and their implementation
- Instigating co-operation between Professional Environmental organizations
- Encouraging co-operation and contacts between the individual environmental professionals who are the members of the organizations within EFAEP, e.g. ecologists with other environmental professionals
- Providing either itself or through its members’ conferences and seminars on relevant environmental issues, e.g. climate change
- Promoting training across a broad spectrum of European environmental issues including conservation and biodiversity
- Developing common standards of excellence and practice
- Raising public awareness of current environmental issues across Europe
- Increasing links with and influence on central and eastern Europe
- Promoting the development of environmental professionalism which is an important prerequisite of biodiversity conservation
In addition, EFAEP will seek to consolidate the environmental profession in Europe through its new European Network of Environmental Professionals (ENEP). ENEP is an online database of environmental professionals and will help to create a unified body of environmental professionals including those working on biodiversity and conservation.
