APEA, the Portuguese Association of Environmental Engineers, is a non-profit professional association. Founded in October 1985, APEA aims to contribute to the progress of Environmental Engineering. Currently, APEA has around 1600 members (Environmental Engineers and students of Environmental Engineering).

APEA aims to:
- Promote the cooperation and solidarity among its members, by supporting the Environmental Engineers\' interests in the professional, social and cultural fields;
- Increase the recognition of Environmental Engineering and its specific technical and scientific features, as well as stimulate, at the national level, the progress of knowledge and the development of Environmental Engineering and the teaching of Environmental Engineering;
- Contribute to the structuring of the Environmental Engineers’ career;
- Organise information and experiences exchanges with similar associations, both domestic and international, for which purpose it may join international unions and federations.

Some of APEA actions have been:
- Decisive role in forming the College of Environmental Engineering, within the Order of Engineers (Ordem dos Engenheiros).
- Collaboration on Technical Courses and Training Actions.
- Promotion of Seminars, Congresses and Technical Visits.
- Publication of an Informative Bulletin for members, every 3 to 4 months.
- Working groups on:
(i) Rio+10 – together with other ONGs, apea is part of a groupthat participates in the process of the development of the Implementation Plan of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (PIENDS);
(ii) Environmental Education – development of several activities in schools, aiming the promotion of environmental education, and development of an evaluation methodology for Environmental Education Programs;
(iii) Environmental Rehabilitation – compilation of national environmental rehabilitation projects, promoting innovation both on technical and conceptual levels;
(iv) EFAEP – Part of an European working group, which aims to focus on the Environmental Strategy, Policy and Legislation and Sustainability.
- Member of the Expert Normalization Subcommission for the Evaluation of Environmental Performance and Environmental Management Systems of the Institute of Environment, Portugal.
- Exchange of information and experiences within Environmental Engineering Students, through the organization of the National Meetings of Students of Environmental Engineering (every two years).
- Member of the National Council for Quality - Sectorial Commission for the Environment (CNQ) and Member of the Advisory Council of the Portuguese Certification Association (APCER).
