VDI The Association of German Engineers
The Association of German Engineers (VDI) represents about 140.000 engineers and natural scientists in Germany and abroad.
Established since 1856 as a financially and politically unaffiliated non-profit organization, the VDI has become today one of the largest engineering associations in Europe. In Germany, it has long been recognized as the voice of engineers both within the profession as well as in the public arena.
Throughout the years, the Association of German Engineers has successfully expanded its activities committing itself to strongly support and bring knowledge to all those interested on technology and technical issues. Thus, throughout its different projects and initiatives, the VDI is today not only a platform for professional engineers but also for undergraduates, scholars and kids.
Via its internal divisions and its regional and international chapters, the VDI offers a unique network platform. Members benefit from training, technical knowledge, career support as well as many other services which effectively support them throughout the different stages of their career paths as engineers and/or as natural scientist.
VDI expertise lies in the technological and scientific fields. Work is carried out within 12 VDI Societies and their respective Technical Divisions, supported by over 10.000 voluntary members.
The balanced interdisciplinary composition of both engineers and experts from non-technical professions representing science, industry and administration ensures generally accepted as well as reliable high quality results. One example is the well-known VDI Guidelines, constantly updated by single technical divisions. In addition, more than 20.000 experts take part in 100 national and international yearly congresses organized by the VDI Societies and the Centre for Advanced Training.
VDI Society for Energy and Environment (VDI GEU)
Energy and environment are the dominant themes of our time. The future of industrial societies and our way of life depends on these crucial issues. Therefore, substantiated recommendations must be given on the basis of the entire available technical and scientific knowledge and free of bias. Only matter-of-fact and well harmonised decisions protect and create assets and solid fundaments for the future. The finite nature of the available resources makes it inevitable to use and recycle them efficiently. Therefore, practical, future-orientated and affordable solutions must be developed for an environmentally friendly exploitation and consumption of resources and fossil energy carriers, for noise reduction and prevention of air and soil pollution as well as for avoidance and disposal of waste.
In the four faculties and about 50 working committees of the VDI Society for Energy and Environment (VDI GEU) the practical and technical work is done on these issues. These bodies form a creative workshop for the future, providing energy and environment specialists with a platform for networking and information exchange. The VDI GEU is in charge of approximately 18,400 engineers and scientists in their capacities as environmental experts, energy technicians, or occupational safety specialists.
In addition, the VDI Society for Energy and Environment is in charge of VDI members interested in the fields of air pollution prevention and acoustics/noise reduction.
The faculties are
• Management and Safety in Energy and Environmental Technologies
• Resource Management in Energy and Environmental Technologies
• Energy Conversion and Application
• Strategic Energy and Environmental Tasks
• Air Pollution Prevention
• Noise Reduction
All activities of the VDI Society for Energy and Environment are controlled by the Executive and Advisory Board. These two bodies are composed of honorary renowned experts from industry, science, public administration and expert care. They ensure both the important relation to operational practice as well as direct access to the latest developments and research results in energy and environmental technology.
